Patience is a Virtue

Chances are, you've played the new Super Smash Brothers. This being brawl. There was a lot of anger of it before it was released. You know what I'm talking about, don't you? Those months of delayed gaming time. But why did so many people get upset about it? We all knew that there would be a new SSB. We all knew it would be for the Wii. We all knew it would come out at some point. And we all knew it would be awesome. But what we didn't know, is when it would come out.

The problem with setting dates for game releases are that they aren't always right. If you've ever been to a restaurant you'd know a similar thing. You ask how long it will be. They guess around 50 minutes. Well, in 35 minutes, you get a table. Pretty cool right? 15 minutes shorter than expected! However, sometimes, they say around 35 minutes, and it ends up being 50 minutes. Pretty annoying, right? “You said it would be 35 minutes! It was an extra 15 minutes!" Well, what can you do?

It's the same with games. They have to guess how long it will be. They figure that they could finish the game in 3 months, but then it would be tested for maybe 1 and a half months. An extra month to fix it. So it would be 5.5 more months. They release that. Then, it turns out there were more flaws than expected, they want more features, you name it. Something happens and they have to take more time. Because of this, it takes them longer to release it. Just be patient. It will be released at some point. Especially with a big game like SSBB was hyped to be, it better be released at some point!

But some people want it sooner. As a song goes, "I want it all! And I want it now!" Too many people are like that. In the restaurant, you could theoretically get it 50 minutes earlier, but you'd have to sacrifice something. Maybe rather than being a group of 6, be two groups of 3. Maybe switching to the smokers section. Or maybe even asking to sit out in the pouring rain.

Would you want those things? I hope not. Rather, you want to be a group of 6, non-smoking, inside where it is warm. Well, you'd also rather have a game with lots of options, length, and enjoyment. You wouldn't want to play SSBB when there aren't any 1-player modes, there are only 5 characters, and each only has one customized attack. That would get old quickly. I know that I wouldn't want it if it was that. But hey, it would come out a lot sooner.

When they design games, they must create a balance. They could put as much data as possible on the game, but it would take over a year to come out. They could put very little data on the game, but it would come out in a few months. Or they could find a happy medium. This happy medium makes games fun. Sure, the first option would be purely amazing, but I don't want to wait 10 years for the next SSB game. I don't want to be 25 when it comes out. That would be annoying. Even I can't wait that long for a game. I didn't mind the delays. They were a nuisance, but so is that 20 minute wait for your hamburger. That's why, when you are waiting for your hamburger, you can snack on appetizers, pop, or even your napkin if you get desperate. Just occupy yourself until it comes, and then enjoy yourself. Just be patient.
